thanks for response on khz and mhz I guess I need a mhz transceiver for my boat as I am in England and sail in and around europe

I don't have the specific MHz and kHz in front of me, but in marine radios, you don't ( usually) use a 'ham' radio.......for short range....line of sight, usually about 20 miles-30km you use a marine VHF ( very high frequency).........and for longer range transmitting and receiving a SSB...a Single Side Band.....

I don't know if Sailor is still in business, but they made good stuff.........otherwise Raytheon and Icom have a a huge share of the market in the USA because they make reliable gear........go to either companies web pages and query SSB or VHF and you'll get all the tech specs....

you also need to check with the MCA as to licenses requirements; in the US a VHF is basically no license, an SSB a very simple one....
