Stay tabs (also called ecology tabs) were introduced by the Falls City Brewing Company of Louisville, KY in 1975, partly to prevent the injuries caused by removable tabs. Stay tabs almost completely replaced pull tabs by the early 1980s. In this can model, the lid contains a scored region and a pull tab that can be leveraged to open the hole (by pushing the scored region into the can).

In the 1970s concern about the environmental impact of aluminum soda-can pull tabs moved manufacturers to re-evaluate and, ultimately, redesign the style of product.

I really don't know, but do know that we went from using churchkeys on cans to pull tops in 1967 because that was the year I was in Viet Nam. Also mini-skirts became popular with the advent of Panti-hose and the first Superbowl happened that year.

No one knows the day, nor the hour, nor the year when these tabs will be estink. When someone decides to invent a new and glorious tap. Who knows maybe it will be you.
