been there and also not been able to do that. hehe
yep, it is painful to turn your head when it happens.
Most often the cause is some simple injury or accident (can be nothgin more than sleepign in a bad position or holding yoru head to rigidly for too long when using a computer). And the real problem is the more you try to hold your head rigid to avoid the pain, the worse the condition will become.
Best cure is to totally relax the neck - lie down in a very comfortable position, make sure the neck and head are well supported and just make like a vegetable for a while. And even when you have to get up and move aroudn, keep your neck as loose and relaxed as possible. Oh, and even though it is gonna hurt like heck, don't try to avoid turnign yoru head or moving your neck gently - it is going to take very gentle movement and full easing of muscles to restore movement.
As for massage that can help but only if you are comfortable, the neck and head well supported and you maintain the relaxed mode for a while after.
If it persists for too long though see a doctor just to be sure there's no real damage.

The best thing for you to do is rotate ice and heat for starters. Use the ice for 10-15 minutes and you can heat for 20-30. Moist heat works best. If you have a heating pad get a towel moist with warm water and lay it on top. It helps the heat to penetrate deeper. Ice pushes fluid out and helps reduce swelling in the area which lessens pain and heat pulls new fluid in to help heal and it loosens muscles. Rotating these gives you the benefit of both. Try and rest as often as possible. Prop a pillow to support your head when you are watching TV. If you can go to Wal-Mart and get a soft sponge neck brace it works wonders keeping your neck straight in the privacy of your home. When you are getting out of bed or off the couch make sure you roll over onto either side and then hold your head to support it when lifting. Most people don't notice they get out of bed and put all the weight and pressure of lifting there head onto their poor little necks. Get used to doing this to keep these episodes less frequent. Finally, for a little relief use ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin). I suggest them because they are an anti inflammatory.

Go to the ER right now. If it is the left side, it could be cardiac. Either side, it could be a major artery which is breaking.
If it IS serious, the clock is ticking.....
