if not, we're at a sad state when scientists have to band together, get politically active, and try to stop the fast slide back into the dark ages.

You left the Jews out, that wasn't very nice! Actually, I think civilization is getting awfully darn tired of political correctness, it's running rampant to the point of stupidy. There are no more indians, there are now Native Americans. No one is crippled anymore, they're gone from handicapped to physically challenged. There are no longer any blacks in America, now they're African American, regardless of the fact most have never even visited Africa. Is it all a conspiracy to make small words into larger phrases or what? Am I gonna become a Irish/Scottish and whatever mix instead of just the old fashioned white or caucasion? Why all the changes? We haven't changed, just our stupid labels keep changing. I think we're all tired of the constantly changing labels.

Civilization: an advanced state of human society, in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached.
Such a high, which appears to be level because of it's culture, science, industry and government would be law law in my bible; and such a high is also called the "worse"-end state of man, which involves "seven spirits"(Mt 12:45...Rev 1:4;3:1;4:5;5:6).
Don't those recovering from getting high and mighty on law law, to the point of harming themselves and others, afterward speak of a higher power to help them get over(above) such law law?

In Europe yes as regards Christians which is why they're subdued and I hope America follows suit. They must be purged.
