This is very normal. This is just his hackles coming up. The hair along the neck and spine stands up to make the dog look bigger when they are feeling aggressive/competitive or threatened. It is to try to scare the other dog off to avoid a fight. This can also been seen as warning to keep hold of him as, being a staffie he is likely to be up for a fight.

I have a staff too.......all dogs do this when they are responding to some kind of stress.

Like the hairs on the back of your neck stand when you are stressed.

IIt is just a fight or flight response.

Nothing to worry about

STAFFS ARE THE BEST!!!!!!

That is called raising his hackles and it makes the dog look bigger. It happens when dogs are being aggressive and when they are excited.
Your staffie is probably saying to the other dog, stay where you are, this is my yard, don't mess wit me

these are called hackles, most dogs usually put these up when confronted by aggressive dogs or just dogs they dont know. along with the barking, when a dog puts these hackles up it makes them seemingly look alot more harder, tougher to the other dog.

it's perfectly normal. he's just puffing himself up to look big and tough! just the same as blokes who don't know each other do when they're in the pub! lol! he's just showing that he's not going to take any crap off anyone!! my border collie b1tch does it but shakes at the same time cos she's a wuss...it's very comical!
