An old fashioned remedy is a table spoon of apple cidar vinegar and 8 oz. of water. It doesn't taste too bad and really helps. I drink it instead of taking any antacids.
Its also good for an astringent on your skin. It improves circulation. Put some vinegar on a cotton ball and rub it on your skin. Refreshing!
Apple cider vinegar was the cure all in the early 1900's. I read that in an antique book store and tried it...it really worked!

Normal physiological changes during pregnancy cause acid reflux. When you get pregnant your body releases hormones that slow your digestive system down. When we are not pregnant our stomachs secrete stomach acid and contract (called peristalsis) to digest our food. Our bodies do this so that we can extract the nutrients and break them down to a size that our cells can use. When we get pregnant our bodies actually become more efficient at it. Our pregnancy hormones slow our digestive system down so that the food will stay in our system longer. The longer the food is in our system the better chance our body has to get every bit of nutrition available. "Back in the cave man days" this was important because during time of famine or drought we needed to make sure we didn't waste anything. This is also the reason why women have a harder time losing weight than men. We store nutrients and use them slower and better so that we can feed our children during the lean times. Chins up everyone, the upside to our curvy figures. If a famine should hit, women will survive (unless the men eat us) lol.
Some things that you can do: 1. Eat small (no more than 10 normal bites) frequent meals every two hours (if you do not eat for hours the acid builds up in your stomach) 2. Drink no less than 1 gallon of water every day (this decreases the concentration (or thins out) the acid in your stomach) 3. Try to avoid dairy products - this will actually irritate your stomach more 4. If the reflux is really bad eat a BRAT diet for 48 hours to rest your stomach (BRAT includes: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast) and lots and lots of water. 5. Fatty, sugary foods, caffeine, and smoking all make acid reflux much worse.
I hope this helps
Good luck

It is best to try and avoid as many medications as possible when you are pregnant, and if you do need to take something, it is always best to check with your doctor first.
If you are in your 2nd or 3rd trimester, Tums are safe. Definately DO NOT take pepto bismol. Mylanta is generally considered safe in pregnancy, but avoid high doses and only take when absolutely needed.
Most obstetricians and midwives have lists of drugs that are safe to take in pregnancy. At your next appointment you should ask your doctor for one. They really come in handy.

I had heartburn and acid reflux really bad when I was pregnant with all of my children. I had to go to my docter and ask her for something because the feeling was unbearable! She prescribed Prevacid and it worked wonders! It takes about 1-2 days to get into your system but, you take 1 pill a day and if you take it as prescribed, you won't be bothered with acid reflux again! Ask your docter about Prevacid-It worked for me and I hope it works for you!
