Does Canada have a better system when it comes to who it lets in, or is it indicative of some deeply rooted cultural problems in the US?

Or...??

I guess it depends on whether you can (and want to) be selective.

Our immigrant pool (predominantly illegal) works mostly in low-paying entry level jobs. there's some dispute as to whether Americans would want those jobs if we tightened border security and prevented most illegal immigration.

In my view, there would be a large inflationary impact as the cost of a Big Mac, for example, goes to $8 and the guy cooking it gets paid $12.00 per hour. But that's what a free society is all about. We're free to make choices and we must be willing to pay the cost of those choices.

Right now, we reap the benefit of having low cost labor, but still want to moan about the erosion of our "American culture".

The choice is ours... seal the borders, clamp down on employers of illegals and pay twice as much for a lot of what we consume.

...or learn to speak Spanish!

It's more the fact that many people who come to America seem to feel they have the RIGHT to just muscle in and be part of the family immediately. That's not the way it works. Perhaps it used to be, but that's how some parts of the country got to be the sewers they are today. Immigration needs to be controlled, and there has to be an assumption of assimilation. That is, when someone comes here from another country, they will know the language, have a job lined up or use the resources available to find one, and not expect any favors.

Check your facts on that one...about 10 years ago, I read a story about a guy who was a migrant worker in the US, he went to I think Ohio each year, and made 3 grand a month, basically cash, for picking mushrooms...there's other people out there making 4, 5 grand a month, and that's still in the quasi-legal zone. Some kid on an indian reservation was making 2 grand a day, sneaking people into the US across the reservation...would YOU turn your nose up at 2 grand a day? Money vs. laws and principles...can YOU be bought? Hmmm....

The deeply rooted cultural problem is Canada's. They only allow immigrants who have job skills needed in Canada. The US allows everyone to immigrate.

Canada does not welcome immigrants like the US does. Canada discriminates against unskilled workers.
