I know it's a staph infection like virus & that it's very contagious. I know of someone that has this virus & she came into the nail salon while I was there & she was getting a pedicure. I know nail salons are not always the most hygenic & tools may not get completely sterilized inbetween customers. Should she be going to public places like this? Should I notify the salon? The health dept.?? I was really liking this salon until this & I don't think I'll be going back ::o(

well first its not a virus, its a bacteria. MRSA stands for Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. its like a regular staph aureus but its is resistant to a lot of antibiotics. usually, healthy people may have this bacteria on them, but don't have symptoms of any kind. its dangerous when someone sick or weak gets it. this bacteria can be transmitted from person to person by simple touch.

example: she touches the door nob and you touch it afterwards, then you may have some MRSA on your hands.

the easy way to get rid of it is by washing hands when leaving an infected patient's room (at the hospital) or wearing gloves before getting into the room. as for foot salon, well maybe you should ask the person to wear gloves if you are really scared. but if you are in healthy condition, no need to worry for you.

MRSA detection is made by a simple swab analysis from the interior of nostrils. if the person has MRSA even if she doesn't have symptoms, then the detection will be positive. these patients have to be isolated and people in contact with them have to take precautions to avoid transmitting it to other sick people.

well, that's about it.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a specific strain of the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium that has developed antibiotic resistance to all penicillins, including methicillin and other narrow-spectrum β-lactamase-resistant penicillin antibiotics.[1] MRSA was first discovered in the UK in 1961 and is now widespread, particularly in the hospital setting where it is commonly termed a superbug.

MRSA may also be known as oxacillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (ORSA) and multiple-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, while non-methicillin resistant strains of S. aureus are sometimes called methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) if an explicit distinction must be made.

Although MRSA has traditionally been seen as a hospital-associated infection, there is currently an epidemic of community-acquired MRSA in the USA. The abbreviations CA-MRSA (community-associated MRSA) and HA-MRSA (hospital-associated MRSA) are now commonly seen in the literature.

How is it treated?
There are 3 key treatment regimes that are commonly used.

For those who are colonised - a nasal treatment and a skin wash
For those who have a potential or active bloodstream infection - drugs such as Vancomycin, Linezolid or Daptomycin.
For those with infected wounds - special honey, silver bandages, garlic preparations and tea tree oil are all believed to be effective in killing MRSA in a wound.

you probably have mrsa on you. lots of people walk around with it all the time and show no symptoms. its a bacteria that is resistant to most antibiotics. its hard to kill so if someone who is already sick gets it it can be fatal but for the general pulic its not a concern. dont worry about it.
