Yes linguistics is a skill. Some people have a knack for picking up languages faster than others.

The ability to use a LEARNED language is, clearly, a skill. The question you MAY be asking is more like, "Is the ability to speak a language OTHER than the local idiom, a skill?"

That may be less clear. The semantics of the word's usage comes into play.

Is the ability to walk a skill? Is the ability to walk a tightrope a skill?

Is the ability to hold one's breath a skill? Is the ability to hole one's breath for 5 minutes a skill?

Is the ability to hold a cup of hot coffee, while walking across the room a skill? Is the ability to catch and hold a football pass a skill?

The meaning of the word may or may not have to do with the effort put into learning the behaviour. Or, conversly, it may have to do with inherent talent.

For some, certain skills come easilly. For others, reaching the same level of skill may come harder. Is the one who works harder at reachcing that level more skillful?

Can ANY ability that comes natual to a human being be considered a skill? Is a person who can observe and memorize the smallest detail of a scene more skillful than one who can simply look through his eyes and see?

I'll reserve any definitive answer until I read how others respond.

Yes, speaking a language or languanges is a skill. Not everyone can speak good
English or any other languages that needs to be spoken in order to communicate with one another...especially in businesses. Skill sums up the thing(s) that you're good at that's needed either for a job in business or entertainment. Example: Typing 40 words per minute, or Singing a high note. Not everybody share those abilities but many do share it. Companies look for people with certain type of skills so they can be able to hire the person (people) who can perform the job for them.

The ability to speak a language other than your native is considered to be a skill. Unless you go through a college or a university with your major being in a foreign language linguistics. Then you can choose how to list it on your resume. For example, if you are applying for a job as a translator/second language teacher/linguist/etc, then you should list it as your profession (as in they must see that you got that education). For any other position, not related to linguistics you may still want to list it as a separate skill.

Absolutely! Just make sure to differentiate it from other skills. For example, on a resume, type:

Skills:

Software: Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, etc...
Languages: Fluent in Spanish and German, etc...
