I'm asking becuz I have met Americans that had never heard of it before. Is it just a Canadian thing?

Apparently so. Who else but an inventive (not to mention bored-out-of-his-winter-skull) Canadian could come up with something that combines french fries, cheese curds, and brown gravy. . .and make it taste so darned good!

Your arteries will hate you, but your stomach will thank you!

Edit:

Forgot to mention that I'm American and have some good friends who are Canadian. That's how I knew about poutine.

Poutine is a French-Canadian concoction comprised of french fries, gravy, and cheese curds. (Being a French-Canadian word, you pronounce it as the French-Canadians do.)
This wonderful mélange of taste-tempting but calorie-rich treats originated in Québec, in the region of the Bas-St-Laurent or Gaspésie (so I've been told), caught on in Montréal, and quickly spread from there to other parts of Québec, and even as far as Ottawa. Since then, it has spread across Canada, and is even available at fast-food chains such as Burger King.

Yes it is just a Canadian thing. Technically it started in Quebec I do believe.
