I understand that there are provincial guidelines of what our kids should be learning in what grade/age, etc... But when do kids get to be kids? I have two children- a girl who is 12 in December (grade 7), and my son is 7 (grade 1). My husband and I got a YMCA family pass 3 weeks ago, and haven't been able to use it because the kids have too much homework. Plus- you feel pressured for them to do it because it seems like a reflection on you as a parent... I just feel like kids are just too overwhelmed, and in truth it's hard to do fun things during the week as a family...
It is like information overload for them... Sometimes they just need to be kids
What do you think?

I agree... if I have to teach my child all these things, because the teacher doesn't want to properly teach her material so that my daughter understands it before she comes home with homework on the subject. What good is she? Homeschooling sounds great and all the time I will have with my precious gem who is growing so fast. I also agree with John Stossel on his reports on teachers. We as parents should have the say in our children's education. The voucher system would give me the power to enroll my daughter in a place that I think is better for her.

No i don't think that children get to much homework. They have homework four days a week. My son is 8 and in the 3rd grade, he reads on a 6th grade level. I believe that this is the time when children are like sponges and they absorb everything. My son gets to be a child after his homework is done and on the weekends. I don't stop doing homework on Fridays, he must learn a new word everyday. I think the problem is that some parents are more concerned with the wrong things, I rather my son being educated than worry abut whether or not my husband & I make it to the YMCA. My son is well rounded loves to do school work and has ample time to play and enjoy his childhood but he knows that his education is first. We go on vacations, to the movies, museums, park and everything else but we do homework first. My son is an honor roll student and I am proud to say that.

Yes, I agree with you. I think its rediculous. It is harming the family unit. It takes away the time at home in the evening with your family as the kids are using that time doing homework that shoudl be done while in school.

I for one, would never send my kids to public schools. I would only home school. There is much support out there for that. It is not as hard as you may think, you just need to be committed. And from you noticing this trend to keep the kids involved into their family time-shows you may be a perfect person to home school.

Again, I agree... you are right. They are out of control. Public schools are not a place for my kids. They are being controlled by the left now. Scarey-

Yes! And some kids in elementary schools are learning the same things that older kids didn't learn in those grades. It's too much for them and too much for us. my mom can't even help me on my homework and she had straight As throughout her school days!

I totally agree with you. I know that when I was in school I had excessive homework -- it made college seem like a breeze by comparison. In any case though, you should be proud that your kids are actually doing their homework. A lot of kids don't.

homework is something teachers give to students to let them practice and to see if they catch on but yes kids are kids and need time to have other activities too. some teachers just like to over do it and give alot of homework to just make them do work. but sometimes their are very mean teachers that gives alot of homework and don't even check them.

yes they do. even if they just come home with 1 assignment it will take a long time i think they should just come home with 2 assignments that are easy and they can do the rest in school because that where they learn.
