Those who brag or tell fictional stories, do it for attention. People like that have low self-esteem and have to do things like that to bring it up. Unfortunately although it is not harmful if done sporadically, frequent bragging may lead to the lier compulsion.
Talk with him that misrepresentation in long run will make him less popular.

Yes, it's normal. He has low self-esteem and is trying to boost his confidence. Unless he's making up harmful lies, there is no harm in his fantasizing. His dreams may come true one day if he's fabricating the life he wishes he had. If you are his parent, I would suggest you gently explain this to him. Emphasize that he should not be making up stories that involve others. He should not be lying and hurting others to gain respect, power, or recognition. Point out other ways for him to do that; point out his talents, achievements and good points.

It's normal for someone who may feel left out of things. Maybe it's his way of trying to make friends and be popular. It isn't normal, but it is sad. Why don't you try to overlook this and be his friend Tyler. That would also be abnormal as kids can be so cruel. Dare to be different.

Yes when I was 14...I caught a 68" muskie, I knocked out a guy with one punch, I hit 20 homeruns in one season and I personally saved the pope's life.....

And sadly...none of it helped a bit in being popular.... but yeah it's normal.

probably starved for affection and friendship...like I was.

I think most teenage boys will do this. Especially if they are insecure. I wouldn't make a big deal of it just ignore it and try and find the route of the problem if you care for him.

14? Heck, I'm 23 and still make up stories about activities. Don't worry about it, I did it and still do. I am sure that other guys can relate that they just want to seem like they are cooler than they are.
