I was in the Navy and my sister was in the Air Force as was my Grandfather. If you join the Navy you will be stationed at a base and assigned to a ship at that base. Most ships in the Navy do not sit still for very long. Ships on the West coast leave every year for 6 months on the west pac cruise. You will see japan, australia, phillipines, hawaii to name a few. The East coast ships do the same thing except they go to the mediteranean sea and you will visit ports like italy, africa, greece ect. Here is the problem, you are gone 6 months working on your ship, the other 6 months of the year your ship is gone a few weeks here a month there. You have no real time for starting a family or to visit your current family. That is why the Navy leads all the military forces in divorce rate. Where ever you get stationed in the Air Force your family will be allowed to live with you on base. (provided you are not in a war zone) So, you will still have the opportunity to see the world and have a family too. Most of the time in the Navy you will have a rotation from one ship to a shore duty and then to a different ship; but, the time on the ship is much longer than the time you have as shore duty. Maybe four years on ship then two years of shore duty.
Best wishes with whatever you decide.

My husband is in the Air Force and I can give you as much info as I can. Please don't listen to people who say the Air Force is spoiled or work "business"hours. The AirForce is a 24 hour a day job. Yes, if you have a clerical job, you will more than likely work from 0700-1600 (that's 7-4) but there are 3 major shifts in the Air Force. Days-0700-1600 (7-4), 1400-2400 (2-midnight) and 2300-0800(11pm-8am). It depends on your job. My husband is a crew chief and works 12 hour shifts most days and a lot of weekends. He deploys regularly. His job is challenging fulfilling. The education opportunites are great (when you can work in classes around your work schedule) and the new online courses are a godsend for those that work the non-normal hours. The Air Force is supportive and always willing to help it's Airmen. The Air Force can send you anywhere. We done tours in Japan, Italy, the UK, Germany, Florida, Colorado, and Virginia. We move every 1-2 years due to my husband's job. I have very little experience with the Navy except that thier weight requirement is less strict than the Air Force. Speak with a recruiter. They will be frank and upfront about what to expect and what is expected of you :)

Your going to hear it both ways and your right. It's up to you to decide. Having spent 20+ years in the AF myself and retired, I would still pick the AF. Pay is the same in all branches but if you think you'd like to float around on a boat for months go Navy. But if you would rather keep your two feet on solid ground like I did the only choice would be the Air Force.... that is unless you choose a career field flying on aircraft, but to me that was a lot better then a boat any day. Do be very careful when choosing the field you want to work in though either which way as there are jobs that they will want to fill that are covered up with the way they are spelled out to you. Know the exact job your going to get before signing the contract or you could get stuck suffering your enlistment out doing something you'd dislike. Be like going into McDonald's and they tell you that you'll be running the cash register and then have you doing dishes after they hire you. so be real careful. Four years of doing something you hate to do is a long time.

Navy is very intrusive on your family life, when on a ship you go overseas atleast once a year, 3+months at a time. Most of the airforce runs very close to bussiness hours ( during peace time anyway). If I had my time over again I would have defanatly joined the airforce and not the navy

Air Force - Navy will make you cut your hair. Navy has 6 month deployments on a boat.

Air Force is the most civilised branch of service.

I was in the Air Force for six years so I have to vote for Air Force. It all comes down to what you intend to do in the service I guess. You can't get stationed on an aircraft carrier in the Air Force but you can't refuel B-52's in the Navy.

Go Airforce. So many more opportunities if you decide to get out. I am in the army and air force is the best way to go. Shorter deployments, better equipment. Pretty much Air Force are the spoiled ones of the military.

I could not stand to be couped up on a ship for 6 months at a time. I chose the AF due to not being confined somewhere. Others don't mind it and I've known some that were on submarine duty....

If you choose the Navy, hope you're not prone to sea sickness...

well i guess youre at age where youve decided to do something positive in you life...my boys are coming of age, first of make sure you have a diploma it wasnt like when i enlisted , now u have to a diploma or they wont take you....if you want travel and see the world then choose the navy....they go all over the world and from what i hear they are damn good....the airforce for an education and again it all depends on what carrer field you want to go into. ask both of them and dont let them pressure you in what you want...remember you are enlisting they arent drafting you....its a tough carreer when u start but in the long run its well worth it...........good luck
