Jenn,
To some degree good or bad it will get better with age, but my experience with this has shown me that it will never go away completely. A step child will always hold a grudge, either hidden or open about the divorce of there parents and the person that came later, be it Step Mother or Step Father will never be a replacement. Life goes on and you must do the best you can do, one day at a time. Talking to the child may help, but it won't make the problem go away, after all he or she must live with this everyday of there life.

Well I really feel for you. My step child (now 18) had to come and live with us for a year. OMG what a B*t*c*. She never like me no matter what I did for her. Finally I got fed up and told her she was OUT when she turn 18.
My hubby stood behind ME...and that is important in fighting a kid like that.

GOOD LUCK

Well, there's not much you can do to change the mind of a 17 year old. They have it set in their mind that they are right, and the step parent is wrong. The most you can do is try to be civil and live your life and let them live theirs.

Stick together with your spouse. Have the biological parent step in and set some real tough rules confronting the child and instilling in him or her that they will not succeed and that all attempts will result in discipline. When 18, boot his/her butt out of the house.

This can be a problem even in natural parent situations. You and your spouse need to be a unified front. Make decisions together, even the small ones. The good news is that your time with this kiddo is short because he/she is already 17.
