what exactly is a hematocrit? any info you could give me would be great!

its the % of red blood cells in total blood. if you have low hemoglobin (anemia) usually the hematocrit is lower and the number of red blood cells too if its due to chronic or sudden bleeding. usually hematocrit is between 33-41%. over 41 % may be caused by dehydration or polyglobulia (too much red blood cells).

it's essentially your red blood cell count. normal value around 35-42, varying between men and women & depends specifically on the lab your blood was tested. this is the number that your doctor looks at to assess anemia.
