Basic food hygiene is a one day course usually costing about 65 quid. You can then go on to do Hazard Analysis (by law if you are an owner or supervisor) You can also do Intermediate food hygiene, this is more in depth and can take 12 weeks. Your local college should be able to give you all the details.

Its a very easy course just a couple of hours is all thats needed then a multiple choice question paper at the end. You have to get about 75% right i think. The amount you pay depends on where you take it, your local council may hold a course or most colleges do. but they will probably string it out and do it over a couple of days.
Last time i did mine it cost me £60 which is about the average rate, although you have to renew your certificate every 3 years though unless you take the next level.
Im renewing mine in about 2 weeks time and this time the course is only costing me £10 . .....bargain !!!
make sure you shop around, some places will charge a couple of hundred pounds to people that are naive to the cost.

I'm a qualified food hygiene examiner and depending on whether you are working or not and where in the country you are it'll cost between nothing and £ 95. If you are employed in the catering industry then your employer should by rights be paying for you, if you are self employed contact the local enviromental department of your council and ask them for information.

I took mine at a college for a semester. But you learned a lot more than just sanitation and safety. Plus you got to take the Serv Safe exam and get HACCP certified as part of it. I think it probably cost me about $400 in tuition.
It was totally easy, except for the part about memorizing all the food borne illnesses, causes, names of bacteria, incubation periods and such, but that wasn't on the Serv Safe exam, just the course final.

Check with your local Health Department. Some courses are free but the more indepth ones will have a fee. ServSafe is a course for restaurant workers and other food service workers. You can get information about that at your local Health Dept. also.

It only takes one full day, often offered on a Saturday, at your local further education college. About £50. Not difficult.
