Hi, I'm looking for a 40-50" HDTV. We're looking at a Samsung 42" DLP and a 42" Sony WEGA LCD. They are both the same resoloution and everything is the same except DLP vs. LCD. If you had to pick, would you buy LCD or DLP. The main use for the Tv will be watching racing, football, baseball, things like sportscenter, and some Dvds.

get the samsung, its picture seems a little better than the sonys, unless youre gonna get a sxrd. plus, the dlp will prevent burn ins if you dont turn off your dvd player.

LCD (liquid crystal display) is available either as flat panel, rear projection or front projection TV; DLP is available as projection TV only.
At present, DLP provides higher brightness and more contrast than most LCD. An exception is the Sony SXRD, which can match DLP contrast and black levels. You have to be wary of the "rainbow effect" in DLP displays: before buying a DLP TV, look at a picture with bright areas and scan your eyes across the screen. If you see a trail of colors, you can see the "rainbow" and you may want to avoid this set. Many people (including me) cannot see these, but some can. For all sets, check off-center viewing of the screen. LCD flat panel in particular can lose brightness and contrast in off-center viewing. Both LCD projectors and DLP projectors are available in "1080p" resolution (they display 1920x1080 pixels on the screen). However, only the Sony SXRD is true 1080p; the DLP sets simulate this resolution with a tecnique called "wobulation". See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/wobulation...
These DLP sets do provide a high resolution picture that is a little "softer" than the LCD units, but some people find that preferable (more "film like").
Newer flat panel LCDs are coming out in true 1920x1080 resolution also.
You should go look at the set and decide what you like better.

Im personally not a fan of DLP tvs. Have seen them come and go in New Zealand within a couple of years. And we are a country a little behind the times. Alot of people (including me) are affected by the "Rainbow Effect". When you scan eyes over screen, see rainbow colours! Horrible to watch. Stick with LCD or Plasma. Here put simply is the differences between Plasma and LCD LCD's: Higher resolution (sharper), brighter, non-reflective. PLASMA: Faster processor for movement, (Smoother images) more natural colours (due to high contrast),and 3 dimensional look. Most people are buying LCDs, as with HD TV they look that much sharper, etc. If you are a sports fanatic, recommended Plasma still, because of lots of movement, but for general TV , gaming, and Dvds, LCD. Follow the trend! Both are great technologies, just different! Similar prices across the board too. It seems that no matter who you talk too, or read reviews about, Plasma still comes up with the overall best picture, but most people would rather have Sharper Image, and Non-Reflective screen, than a more Realistic Image with Smoother Movement?!?! Recommend: Sony/Samsung LCDs. Panasonic/Pioneer/Samsung plasmas. Hope this helps

A direct view television should give you a better picture. Bottom line, compare the pictures of different TVs. I personally like the Sony models as what you are considering.
I've seen some helpful review information on Sony in the latest copy of Sound & Vision.

the sony does not have moving parts like a dlp. this helps over time when the years go by,and parts start to fail.dlp's use a spinning color wheel, but sony uses similar to a video projector based technology(lcd projector).they both are very nice looking sets, though.
