It is best to take the dog to the vet for impacted anal glands. Many people think this is as routine as getting nails clipped but if left un expressed they can become extremely infected and cause fitulation to the outside. Then you will have to pay for anal gland extraction surgery. If the concern is money as the vet to teach you how to express your dog's anal glands and buy a box of latex gloves. Otherwise go once a month (or as often as your dog needs it) to get them expressed at the animal hospital.

If your dogs anal glands are impacted you cannot "just let it be", he needs to see his vet to express his glands. Your vet will advise you as to whether or not you should have them done on a regular basis. Good Luck.

PS-This can be painful for your dog-please see your vet.

You have to take them to the vet. This is a potentially very serious problem for a dog. It is extremely uncomfortable and could get infected. It will also impact their digestive system (or the relief of it to be more specific). How would you like it if you had a serious case of hemroids and were not given anything to help with the discomfort? Be kind to your pet, take them to get it checked out.

When these become swollen, the dog will drag his butt on the ground, his back becomes extremely irritated and itchy. The glands cause pain and they can't do their business very well.

You can take your dog to the Vet and he can show you how to express them if you want to learn. It should only cost about ten dollars for him to express them.

Take your pet to the vet and they will express the glands for you. They can also teach you how to do it so you d onot have to pay someone each time. They need to be expressed, otherwise it will continue to itch and could cause infection.

if cost is an issue check with Dog Groomers - they will also "express" the anal gland as part of the grooming.

You need to take him to the vet, if they are impacted then they will not be able to be expressed, and the vet will need to go in and probably infuse them with antibacterial medication.
