If we assume that Mexicans come to America for employment, wouldn't it be in America's best interest to invest in Mexican roads, infrastructure, education and economy? Rural Mexico is devestatingly poor, far poorer than our inner cities in the US. By investing in that country, we can help develop the rural economy to produce jobs there that pay a livable wage and to promote schools that give children a chance to succeed in the global marketplace. Economics works. The only way to slow immigration in America is to make Mexico stronger.

Why won't any American politicians recognize this? Why won't Americans realize that a wealthy Mexico is good, no, great for America? Why build a wall when a bridge is so much more productive?

After World War II, we invested large amounts of money to rebuild Western Europe and Japan. This "Marshall Plan" built strong economies that became our allies and trading partners. A similar plan can do the same for Mexico.

Don't forget your Economics, folks. Money is not a finite resource. Neither are jobs. By investing one, we can create the other.

I like your thoughts of building a bridge. But people just want to fight for their stupid pride. Also, i think politicians just want to win the place in the office, they don't even care about other people, just themselves.

This country does give money to Mexico. Its not our fault that the corrupt people in that Mexican government don't do anything with it but line their own pockets with it.The Mexican people need to take all the energy they expend to cross the border illegally and direct it to fixing Mexico's problems.Mexico IS NOT a poor nation.Only its people are poor because of its government. Why do you try to blame the US for Mexico's failure to provide for ALL its people.?

Read this it looks like we are doing more than our part to "HELP" Mexico

A recent report sponsored by the Multilateral Investment Fund of the 47-nation Inter-American Development Bank found that remittances from the United States to Latin America will total more than $45 billion this year. In only two years, remittances have jumped 51 percent. The report indicates that the surge in remittances reflects the growth in the illegal alien population because illegal aliens are thought to send more money to their families in their home countries than other immigrant populations. The report also finds that remittances now come from almost every state in the country; two decades ago, remittance money usually originated from only four or five states. In Louisiana, where Hurricane Katrina left much of the state to be reconstructed, remittances this year will be $200 million, a 240 percent increase since 2004.

As I read your question, you are talking about "investing," NOT simply "welfare" or "handouts" and it sounds like a good idea. For a start, after 12 years of reforms the Mexican economy is much stronger and more stable than at any time in the past. The political situation is very stable and the power of the most corrupt elements of the old syastem has been broken. Probably a good time to invest in this country.

As you can tell from the majority of racist, hate-filled, uneducated and ignorant replies from your fellow citizens, they mostly do not approves of such an intelligent solution. Where would the average white-trash, racist, low class, uneducated American BE without somebody he considers lower than him to HATE (like a Mexican.)

Oh and just as a reference, your country has NOT ALREADY given Mexico millions! In fact you have given MORE money to Iraq, Afgahnistan, IRAN and NORTH Korea than you have ever given to Mexico, you lying gringo scum.....

What most ignorant racist gringos fail to realize is that the Mexican government has attempted to pour BILLIONS into solving the poverty problem, but almost ALL of that extra money has been eaten up in the escallating WAR against the American Illegal Drug Users!

Every year the American Illegal Drug Users send BILLIONS of US dollars into Mexico to their friends, partners and allies in the Illegal Drug Trade in order to bribe, corrupt and kill Mexican police, army, prosecutors judges and civilians in order to maintain their supplies of illegal drugs.

This is a war waged by the addicts, consumers, users and those who condone this in the United States of America against the decent people of Mexico. It is costing the Mexican people BILLIONS of Dollars and THOUSANDS of lives every year.

When you whine and snivel about all the problems Mexicans cause YOUR country (by doing the jobs no one else will do). Maybe you might think about dealing with your HUGE DRUG PROBLEM (you consume 80% of ALL the world's illegal drugs!) that is causing almost ALL the problems down here right now!

Interesting. However, we already do invest a lot of money in Mexico. Through NAFTA and other trade agreements large amounts of money go to Mexican businesses and citizens of Mexico. Also, as another responder stated, much of the money earned by Mexicans in America is sent back to Mexico. We actually need to work to ensure that money earned in America stays here to prevent problems in our own econony.

A wealthy, strong economy in Mexico would be great, but we have many worries of our own politicians should focus on. We need to have strong borders to prevent crime and any number of other potential problems. We have a legal way for people to enter our country and no one should be above others in getting a pass for entry. I welcome immigrants, but I also appreciate lawfulness.

Ah, selfishness. And people wonder why the rest of the world finds America to be arrogant. I think you are right that the illegal immigrants wouldn't come if they had good job opportunities back home.

What most people here are forgetting is one small fact: it's easy to say to someone in trouble "yeah, well, YOU deal with it" when you're not in any trouble yourself. But how easy has it been for any of us to fix our OWN problems without any help or support from others. When we are in a bad situation, we always need the help, or at least the quiet support, of others around us. It is the same with nations.

Who here has read the fable of the Lion and the Mouse? Anyone? Think about it.

I agree that a wealthy Mexico would be much better for the US. However, I think that most people feel that we have invested enough with all the millions the illegals send home to their loved ones.
Mexico has resources! Incredible beaches, oil even. Mexico needs to demand that their government clean up!! Support & protect the people & stop robbing them & deporting them to the US. Until the Mexican people stand up there isnt much the US should to except impose sanctions & fines for the burden they are to us.

So, let me paint you a picture: You are driving from California to Mexico. In California you have multimillion dollar homes and golf courses and businesses of all sorts. You cross the border and the dry strip that IS the Rio Grande and you see: abject poverty and...well, you fill in the blanks...one side is a free based economy and the other is...well, Mexico. You have actually pinpointed the nature of the issue quite well....

I am guessing that where you live has better weather why don't We come and FIX you?

To truly make Mexico better, you should invest in sound Mexican companies, like utilities, home builders, etc. They will contribute more to Mexico than any government ever can.

I agree. Make Mexico better. The people running from that country should suck it up and stand up for themselves. There are over 10 million of them residing here illegally - with that number they could definately make some changes if they started a riot in their OWN country. The UNITED STATES is NOT everyone elses mother. I'm sorry, but we have our own problems to deal with.

If that's what you call a "good" idea - Why not just give all terrorrists a free airline ticket to come on over too? Don't you see how ridiculous this sounds?

No the hell it wouldn't be a good idea for the U.S. to invest in Mexico. How stupid is working to build up another country while your own still needs some building up. And we shouldn't have done it for ungrateful Europe either. And believe me, there are other ways to stop illegal immigration. We just have to get congress to take the necessary steps, at all costs.

It is Mexico's responsibility to make their economy better for their people not ours! That is the trouble with all these other places that do not have what America has, they want America to fix it for them. Mexico's Government does not want it better for their people, they are greedy and have run it that way for their own greedy reason. Why would you even suggest America fix it. We are too bust right now fixing other Country's problems that they have created for themselves and that we have created.

Think about what you asked before you ask again.
