The "metallic" smell may be from his anal glands. The glands are on either side of the dog's anus and carry a scent that is particular to the dog (sort of like it's own odorific calling card).

The "metallic" smell may also be caused by trace amounts of blood in the dog's intestinal tract.

Either way, we'd have your vet check it out. The anal glands may need to be cleaned, and the dog's stool (poop) should be checked.

It could be that his anal glands are full and need to be expressed. A good groomer should be able to help you out. If it persists, a trip to the vet is in order.

the kind of food he eats or maybe he gets into the trash can and eats something

It is probably his anal glands, you should take him in to see his vet to have them expressed.

Have you had him/her neutered or spayed?
