They auction an item by displaying the item and placing a box or a can in front of it. People that want to bid on that item , write their bid on a piece of paper and place it in the box.
The highest bid gets the item. Its like a sealed bid auction but not as formal

When you go in you are given a set of ticket and may purchase more. You then choose from a collection of prizes (that are usually donate) and place 1 or more tickets into a "can" to bid for that prize. The more tickets you put in the greater chance you have of winning that prize. Winning tickets are drawn, 1 at a time, throughout the night.
I've picked up some nice prizes and the groups running them usually do well in terms of profit. The 2 hardest parts are getting donations from local businesses and setting up the tables. They sell chinese auction tickets on-line...we bought ours and have plenty left over for the next time.
what viola is describing is a silient auction. Bids are not placed on a chinese auction

Are chinese auctions considered "gambling"? My child's school is holding one soon and is allowing only people 18+ to attend, because they say it's gambling? I disagree but would love to hear from someone who is knowledgeable about the law. Thanks
