This relates to my "Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays" question.

Do you use holiday lights in December? If so, why and how?

I use white lights for the Winter Solstice, a European Pagan holiday, as it is about the return of the light to the world. The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year, so we celebrate that light will come back and things will only get brighter from here on in.

And I add, if you don't, why not?

When I was a wee Pagan Rebirth, I was fascinated by lights of all kinds. To this day, I am still fascinated with lights. I will definitely be decorating my condo (as soon as I close on it, lol) with various lights. I prefer colors over solid white lights, though.

I just think the lights are pretty. I'm aware it's borrowed from Winter Solstice celebrations, which makes it more appealing (as if it weren't anyway) to me. I think the majority of people are attracted to them and since it's a borrowed tradition from a religion not many practice anymore, I don't know that a lot care. As long as it makes them happy, great. (B/c I like it, too :-) )
I know some restaurants have white lights all year round to attract customers.

We do a tree, lights, presents -- but no talk of jesus. As you mentioned, the holiday itself was borrowed from the pagan solstice celebrations anyway (best "biblical" guess is that jesus was born in April), and I have no problem with setting aside a time of year to wish each other well, prepare for the coming year, and give gifts to the ones you love. Don't need jesus to do that :)

I used to do it for the holidays when I believed in a 'god' though I could never bring myself to use religious types of decorations because I always had a lingering doubt. I still put up lights and decorations but it is to celebrate the season of winter. I think it's wonderful that people decorate especially the outside. If it brings a smile to someone's face then that's great. :-)

I use Christmas lights as a sign of holiday spirit. The colorful shows all around the neighborhoods put people in a good mood, which is what the holidays are all about :)

Peace and love be with ye.

I have white lights up in the house year-round around some doorways because it's so pretty. When we do put a tree up, of course we put lights on it, again, because they're so pretty. We won't be putting a tree up this year, though, because we have a new puppy that loves to eat tree branches (and anything else he can get his paws on).

Yea. I'm not so hung up on it. I'm Neo-Hellenic, there's not much to do at Christmas/Yule except play with all the Wiccans and Druids anyway, so I just go for the whole hog secular Hallmark Christmas thing. Fun stuff.

Nah, not really. I mean my PARENTS do, but I don't plan on hanging any lights around my house. I'll let other people pick up the slack. I'm sure they're up to the task.
