I heard that black coffee, no cream, no sugar helps children that are hyper. True or Not? Anyone know a natural remedy?

I don't know for sure.. who knows? It sounds like there's a chance it -might- work. After all, people who don't display signs of ADD actually get hyper when they take ritilin, aderall, ect. I'd talk to a doctor, though.

There are many alternatives to Ritalin. In prescription meds, there is Adderall, Concerta, Strattera, and an extended release Ritalin SR.

For natural alternatives, some people have had success on the Feingold diet, but others have not. It's a very restrictive diet, but you might want to try it out and see if it works anyway.

I've tried the fish oils, ginko and other natural alternatives, and none seem to work. Ginko left me feeling....strange (hard to explain, but not a feeling I want to repeat.)

Ironically, coffee and Ritalin are both stimulents. But, caffeine is a much stronger stimulent, and has more side-effects, the worst one being addiction. Some people with ADHD can get by on caffeinated drinks for their treatment, but I wouldn't try this for a child.

Please talk to your pediatrician about any alternatives, as many are unregulated and some can even be dangerous.

And as for the guy who suggested weed...that would only make the ADHD worse!

Focalin, Adderal,

better bet is to look into Strattera (Atomoxetine) it is a non-stimulant ADHD medication by Eli Lilly, It has proven effective for several of the key factors related to the attention issues with ADD/ADHD.
We have a daughter with the hyperactive overlay and have found Focalin the most effective medication with the least amount of side effects..

I've never heard the coffee thing, but that sounds insane.

Try taking your kids off sugar. I've read that many behavioral problems for which parents get their kids on script drugs are actually managable just by correcting the kids' eating habits.

You have got to be kidding me. Loads of caffeine for a hyper child?

A good natural remedy for a hyper, out of control kid is a smack on the butt.

STRATERRA IS A NON-STIMULANT DRUG THAT SOMETIMES WORKS. ADDERALL IS A STIMULANT. MUST KNOW THAT SOME PEOPLE WITH ADHD SWEAR THAT THC WORKS FOR THEM. UNFORTUNATELY THE GOVT. DOES NOT ASPIRE TO THIS THINKING YET. MAYBE TRY CAMMOMILE TEA.
