for bi-polar they usually prescribe a anti-depressant and a "mood stabilizer" which is a "anti-convulsant" drug. Example of "Mood stabilizers" are: Depakote, Topamax, Lamictal, Neurontin, etc and of course there are two kinds/types of anti--depressants. Different neurotransmitters that are effected. for example: Zoloft, Prozac, etc are one. And Cymbalta, Trazadone, etc. The reason is that one helps the "mania" and the other the "depression" I would check more than once by a psychiatrist whether you do have bi-polar to make sure. Some Dr's. are quick to diagnose this if you have insomnia. Its not always the diagnosis you "can" have both w/o a diagnosis of bi-polar. (I have been on so many different ones in the past)
Sometimes but rarely would they prescribe a anti-psychotic medication like Seroquel, Resperdal, etc.
The FDA I remember when it was in trials from the NMHA site for experimentation The VNS Therapy System is a pacemaker-like device implanted in the chest that delivers electrical impulses to the brain through an electrode attached to a nerve in the neck. This is for extreme depression.
If they find a good combination of drugs you can feel quite "normal" for me it has taken 9 yrs for them to find that (Cymbalta/Lamictal)
good luck,
many blessings,

I had been diagnosed as bipolar with more depressive tendencies and my doctor had me on depakote which causes weight gain, and zoloft for depression and seroquel for anxiety and hallucinations and whatnot. They all worked really well. The worst part were the side effects, seroquel make me very sleepy and the depakote made me gain 40 pounds in a year.
Then I found out that I wasn't bipolar, just a little depressed and was taking the medicine for basically nothing.
My advice, find a really good doctor to really diagnose you. If you have any doubt that the diagnose is true get a second opinion. And take the medicine everyday even if you find yourself feeling better or numb from the medicine because relapses are devasting setbacks for yourself and for your family. Bipolar is definately something that is managable as long as you take your medicine everyday.

Lithium + Lamictal has been a successful combo for me. I also take Zyprexa & Seroquel.

Not to sound dramatic and just to reiterate, the Lithium + Lamictal saved my life. I was in a 'going nowhere' world, full of misc. meds, hospitalizations and ECT's, when finally a new pdoc rescued me and put me on these meds. A totally dramatic change - I have my life back. Years and years of useless pdocs, and one comes along and tackles the problem finally.

Life can be a ***** with BP, and since I slant towards the depression mood swing all I saw was blackness.

Best of luck to you.

Plenty. Either anti-convulsants or anti-psychotics. Many bipolar sufferers end up on a cocktail of these and anti-depressants and other drugs. Everyone is different, and sooner or later you find the combo that works for you.

I recommend a single high potency dose of cyanide.
But you better talk to your doctor first.
