He is sort of young to have serious arthritis. He is on the heavy side though and I would try to bring him down a little in the next few years. Excess weight stresses the joints that are likely to become arthritic.

I have a 22 yr old cat with severe arthritis. Sometimes she will pivot around to turn rather than use her back legs. She plugs along with a rather stiff gait as any 100 yr old human lady does. A 12 yr old cat is around 60 in human years.

If he's acting kind of slow and cranky in the morning or in cold weather, if he can't move as well as he used to, or if he's not willing to do things that he used to do like go up or down stairs.

watch him carefully. if he has trouble getting up from lying down or if he can't jump up onto places he can normally reach. also, watch how much he eats, sometimes arthritis can affect their appitite.
