She claims to wash her hair twice in that area-- I have never visualized this-- she is 12 and has such oily hair. I am disgusted to touch it. Please help. She always wears her hair in a ponytail because it looks greasy and flat. I have bought anti--oil products!!!

We do not use conditioner and the clarifying conditioner is what I buy-- I assure you she does not brush it too often. She does not blow dry, though--- that will help??

Tell her not to brush as often. That helps a lot. It only intensifies the oil being spread. If it is just excess oil, clarifying shampoos are best and make sure she scrubs well. Try Prell or you also might try a tetri shampoo, like Nioxin. Don't use conditioner on the hair. Make sure she blow dries her hair after showering, especially getting the roots first. If the problem still persists, you might want to look into seeing a dermatologist. She may have overactive sweat glands and may need a prescription. It's not that uncommon, so don't worry. Try the first steps and work your way to the doc if nessessary. Good Luck!

Ok, now listen to me because I have had oily hair for way to long, but now its fine because of so much experience. I known this sounds werid, but:

1. The best thing to use for oily hair is talcum powder. Just use a little and gently rub it in, and rub it in good so your hairs not white! That takes away lots of oils. Second, if you still have oily hair, or just don't want to use talcum powder(by the way thats the white powder stuff for babies, but hey, it works!), use "witch hazel", damp a cotton ball into in and rub that in. Both these give off a weird smell, so I dont use it when I go out. Or, i put both these in, take a shower, then go and my hair isn't oily!

2. Now for the shower, I swim so I take a shower after practice and in the morning. In the morning I use "herbal essance clarifying shampoo", its green adn smells great, and at night i use "head and shoulders", they all work good(I have dandruff too). And keep away from any conditoner, just use shampoos.

3. After the shower, do not comb your hair. I just let it sit for a little, then I brush it, then I use a hair dryer, and then I comb it.

4. During the day, touch your hair as little as possible. The oils from your hands and skin go into your hair, leaving it more oily

5. Use a oil cleansing lotion on your face, to keep your bangs nice all day.

6. Do not get stressed out. This causes your oil glangs to produce even more oil!! Just melow fellow

Sounds like a lot, huh? Well, you get used to it. And hey, anything for beatuy right?

I would take her to a dermatologist. They can probably provide something that will give her some relief. She is in a very difficult time in her life, almost a teen - but not quite. As you know, puberty is about to hit. A lot of this oily secretions can be a side effect of that. I would mention this to her pediatrician (as they may want to check her hormone levels and make sure everything is normal) and also take her to a dermatologist. As embarressing as it may be, you need to make sure she knows how to properly wash her hair (maybe have a sink hair washing party for you both) and show her how to scrub!!! (That way she isn't uncomfortable.) Make sure she is using good quality products as well (or use what the doctor recommends).

BTW - I promise this won't freak her docs out. You would be surprised at how often they probably see stuff like this come through. Make sure she knows that she should feel comfortable and safe to talk to her doc plainly about this problem. When she gets older, she'll have to talk about way more personal things anyway. May as well tackle this now so she gets over her embarressment and starts being proactive to take care of this problem now. Good for you mom, for noticing and wanting to fix it too before the boys notice. Then she will have a complex about it.

sometimes too much washing can make the hair even greasier (i know that seems strange, but it's true). try washing every other day with a clarifying shampoo and rub baby powder into the oily areas to sop up the grease. if she has really dark hair the baby powder will look really white and you have to rub it in good, or Bumble and Bumble makes colored powder to spray into dark hair.

It comes in a small squared bottle. I believe you can get it about every where. Or sometimes a new brush or pony tail ties could improve...

i'm not sure if you've tried this, but one option would be to go beyond just hair products and use other types of cleansers intended for oily skin. anti-acne face washes tend to be more drying than any shampoo, so perhaps she could try this on her hair.

DO NOT PUT CONDITIONER IN HER HAIR
thats the worst thing for oily hair
my very dry hair is the total opposite
tell her to stop brushing it so much, that can have something to do with it

Sounds as if she may have oily seborrhea. She needs a medicated shampoo. Most department stores have them. No conditioner.
