The United States because America refers to the continents North America and South America. I actually like "The States" the best the way the Brits say it.

The United States of America is the name of our country. I think the United States is fine, too.
"America", however, is a much larger geographical area than just the country we're referring to....remember - it's the United States OF America. That "of" is a pretty important word there....the "Americas" is, in fact, the land compromising all of the Western Hemisphere or the New World....meaning the continents of North America & South America (and all the other islands & regions in the area).....it's ALL "America"....the U.S. is just one part of that landmass.

United States of America. Using the logic that we are called American because we are from the continent of America, one should also conclude that Mexicans and Canadians are Americans as well. I am sure they wouldn't care for that reference however.

The United States of America, but it is very long when you need to say it over in over in conversation or when you are writing about it...so when spoken I choose to say American, when written I like to say U.S. or U.S.A.
We are called Americans, so calling the nation America makes good sense.
