Is there a biological reason that we cry or is it just an emotional reaction?

It's mostly emotional, but tears do carry out bad chemicals. Which is why people will also cry when they say, are cutting onions.

i believe it is emotional except say for some smells , say tear gas, onions,, or some other irritant to eye..
