I am muslim, and in 8th grade. In my school district, islamic hoidays are never counted as excused absences, while jewish holidays are...also, during islamic holidays, there is always lots of homework, while on jewish holidays there is no homework. I don't think this is fair...and my jewish friends dont think it is fair either...why are the jewish holdiays respected more? By the way, there are an equal amount of jews and muslims in my school...about 15 of each out of the 1000 in my school. Why do you think this is? and what should we do about it? By the way, i am completely respecting all religions.

From the question, it's not clear what city or country this experience is arising from. In some countries, all major holidays of all religions practiced in that country are recognized, while in many countries, only the majority religion's holidays are recognized.

Assuming this experience is in the US, you and your family and friends can change the situation by bringing it up to the schoolboards. At the beginning of the school year, supply the schools, teachers and schoolboards with calendars outlining the major Muslim holidays, and their significance, and ask them to plan the school calendars and homework loads around those dates.

Much can be accomplished with dialogue and sharing experiences.

There was a time when Jewish holidays were not recognized either, and only got changed after much dialogue.

Good luck, and Happy Ramadhan!

religions are to be treated equally in all schools. it just happens to be that the majority of people in the schools years ago were jewish and were given the holly days off along with the entire school. it may seem that you get more homework on these days. try pointing it out to a teacher when there is 1 of your holidays. i live in a city that is mainly black and puerto rican and for some reason, we get all the jewish holidays off, go figure! we are also not allowed to give "christmas" themed treats to the children in the classes. the can be winter themed and it is no longer christmas break, but now winter recess

well my dear friend, islam is tolerated here in north america by all.
i do not believe in your faith but i respect you for the way you respect GOD. but unfortuneatly you are a religion that has been made to suffer because of certain people

now back to your question, your religion is only special to you, not to others, the jews have built and still own the USA, they do deserve to be respected on holidays, they are the chosen ones don't forget.

as far as muslims go, they have really not contributed to anything in the USA since it's creation but now they are requesting respect for holidays, are we to respect every religious holiday? schools would be closed all year.

remember something my dear friend, you are a minority, in islam countries, do they respect american holidays?

i suggest you accept the fact the muslim holidays will never be accepted in the USA and leave it at that because one of your people will do something to hurt the muslim religion even more than it has been hurt.

for what it is worth, i am orthodox greek and i never complained about my school being opened on my easter.

life is not fair in many ways but it is better to just accept reality

Where I went to school Jewish or Muslim holidays were never recognized. Of course there are no Jewish or Muslims there. It's a very small town.

That's interesting, all religious holidays should be excused absence. As far as homework goes assigning or not assigning homework likely does not fall under sort of ACLU issue. If your parent excuses you from school you are excused, so I am not sure what you mean by Muslim holidays are not excused but Jewish are. Talk to your administrator or attend the next parent-teacher meeting and bring it up. As far as homework goes, talk to your teachers and explain your situation and I bet they will be willing to accomodate.

Maybe because the Jewish religion has been practiced longer in this area than the Muslim one. It is not right to discriminate religious preference and it may just be that the rules haven't been set in place. Best thing to do is get together with people of your same religion and speak to people in charge to get things changed.

maybe if you had a higher percentage of muslims in your city, islamic holidays might receive equal attention as those of the jews.

PROTEST, GET MAD!!! Here, we respect all religions. As long as you tell your teacher in advance, no matter what religion it is, they let you have the day off. Talk to the principal and if he/she doesn't do anything, do to the school board. In this day and age we need to respect everyone!
