Well for me, if someone is too forward and pushy, they're gonna scare me off a bit... which seems to be all the more true for women scaring men off! I enjoy being single, I enjoy the flirtatious phase of getting to know someone without getting too involved, relationships have to evolve over time. I have my own life, so if I'm gonna get involved with someone I need to slowly adjust and let them into my life gradually. For me it's not so much a question of "the chase" but a matter of showing just enough interest to keep things progressing without getting too caught-up and overwhelmed by it. When one person shows a lot more interest than the other, it throws the whole thing out of balance... when you both play off each other's reaction and just let it unfold without either one pushing anything, you don't have to step outside your comfort zone, your comfort zone simply expands to include them.

Perhaps the people you are into are too good looking for you and vice versa for people into you (or your standards might be too high)
