Ask the pediatrician for the best diet that is appropriate for the child and keep the doctor updated as to how the diet is or isn't working.

Do not put a 13 year old on an actual "diet". The key is to exercise more, and eat healthy foods. Don't do any of these crazy fad diets, and be careful about how you approach the child about this. You don't want to make them so self conscious that they develop an eating disorder, but you do need to stress the importance of eating healthy.

I would introduce more forms of exercise. Get outside more, do things as a family. Go for walks after supper. Cut back on sugary treats and sodas... as well as fast food.

The idea isn't to promote a "diet", it's to introduce a lifestyle change. Good eating and exercise habits are something that will follow well into adulthood, and hopefully lead to healthier life choices over all.

Good luck!

a person that young should not be on a diet. They are still growing and you can stunt their growth if you let them. Suggest that increased activity will do more to reduce weight and build strong bones and muscle.
