unfortunatley, its the room you walk into from the front door, which everyone uses to enter the house. directly in front of you as you walk in the house is the staircase to 2nd floor, on right is kitchen and you walk through the dining room to get to the living room and rest of the house. I would like to do something to separate it somehow, maybe with a screen between the table and the "walkway" part of the room. I also want to have a traditional feel to match the rest of the house.

Instead of a screen, have you considered positioning a buffet, sideboard or wide but low bookcase to act as a partition? It would direct the traffic, but not enclose the space or cut it off from view.

Have you considered switching the furniture to make the dining a living room, and vise versa? We're currently looking at buying houses and there are some that have the dining room like that, and the family room in the back, both are off the kitchen. I'd just switch the layout and have a formal living room there isntead.

I don't think that you should separate it from the rest of the house. You
need the chi to flow easily through your house. If you block off the flow you
will create problems. By traditional do you mean large dark furniture? I
wouldn't recommend this. Light coloured furniture, and light coloured walls
would be best.

The success of any decorating scheme depends on how well it suits all the members of your family. You can start by looking through magazines, and catalogs. To create a décor that you will be happy with, think about what you want and also what you don’t want.
