If a skydivers chute fails to open, why do we need an inquest to discover cause of death,I would have thought it was a bit obvious from the hole in the ground(Deceleration Injuries).?

As most of the others have said, an inquest is to determine the events leading up to the unexpected death. A post-mortem would usually discover the cause of death, even though it might seem obvious the victim could have had a heart attack or stroke first.

An accident is a chain of events ending in the injury, if at any point this chain is broken then no injury i.e. put a parachute on before jumping! So just in case someone had intentionally damaged the mechanism hence causing the accident. The public needs to be protected from those who would do them harm and for the living family gives some closure

Isn't it to discover whether or not the death was caused by accidental or other means ... ie, the events leading up to the death.

Someone may have sabotagued the chute.

The way the law works it`s probably to establish if the skydiver can be sued by the farmer who`s field he has nose dived into.

To try to prevent it from happening again. Also to investigate criminal negligence. Maybe the dude had a heart attack and couldn't open his chute.

the inquest is not to determine the cause of death, it is to determine why the chute did not open.

Any death by "unnatural causes" is investigated by the coroner. It's the law.

It could be murder/manslaughter if someone tampered with the equipment or pushed them before they were ready

Maybe they check the backpack to see if it was sabotaged (hence murder) or if it looks like he did it himself (hence sucide). Something along those lines?
