What is the criteria for a denomination to be labeled Christian? I always thought it was simply that they had to believe that Jesus Christ is their personal savior for the forgiveness of thier sins. Does that pretty much sum up the base-line doctrine of Christianity? How does Mormonism compare to this base-line doctrine?

Christian or non-Christian doesn't make Mormons fundementally evil. Sin is sin. We are to hate the sin and love the sinner no matter what. I only ask because I'd like to know what people think.

Yes, we're Christians. And yes, your definition of Christianity is correct, for the most part.
We believe that Jesus Christ is our personal Savior, and that there is no other name by which a person can be saved.
We also believe that there are "plain and precious truths" which have been taken from the Bible, and that the Book of Mormon, along with other modern-day scriptures have restored those plain and precious truths. So in essence, we believe we have what other Christians have, plus more, and that the Book of Mormon is another testement of Jesus Christ. Some/Most other Christians believe that is "adding to the Bible", but it's not. It provides clarity to an already Holy Book (the Bible), which has through misinterpretation, mistranslation, and unfortunatly through less innocent means, been corrupted.

Thanks for your question.

Mormons have a different definition of Salvation.

It is written in the bible that the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life (Salvation).

Mormons think Jesus paid the price for sins that we can be saved if we do all that we can do. That would be things to be done in the Mormon church.

For the Christian, when becomes born of God, is made the righteousness of Christ. Once we are saved (eternal life received) we go to church because we are the righteousness of Christ.

For Mormons, they go to church and do to be righteous. Yet they haven't put on Christ righteousness yet. So are still sinners needing a Savior.

Yes, Mormons consider themselves to be Christians.
Many Christians consider belief in the Trinity to be a pre-requisite to be called Christian, so they would exclude Jehovah's Witnesses as well as Mormons from that category.
I don't believe it is important what a person calls himself. What is important is how God sees us. Does He see the person through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ? Is the person a believer in that as the only basis for being accepted by God? - I don't mean to use this platform to preach on, but for myself, the definition of Christianity falls somewhere in there. And living like a Christian includes loving and respecting people, whatever they should call themselves.

Mormons are Christians. Christian fundamentally means followers of Christ. Christ makes it possible for us to return to live with Heavenly Father and to receive all that he has to give us. I see in this forum our beliefs represented with a twisted bitterness that appears as though we are belittlling Heavenly Father. Yes, we believe in an eternal destiny that we are heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17), to receive all that God has to give us. Why should believing that be bad? Sure, misrepresent it in a certain way and it sounds like God is less than He is.
It makes me want to be better than I am. I seek to follow Christ's example. In the end, the only way into the Kingdom of Heaven will be through Jesus Christ. Heavenly Father is God over all.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints (Mormons) are Christians. The fundamental reason that some people view them as non-christians is because they do not believe in the Holy Trinity(God, Jesus, Holy Spirit) as one being. Mormons believe in God/Heavenly Father as a separate being, Jesus Christ/God's Son as another separate being, and the Holy Ghost/Spirit as the third separate being in what is known as the Godhead. If you really want to know more about this religion, I would suggest going on line to LDS.org, or contacting the missionaries for this church who would be glad to answer any of your questions.

The LDS think so, yes. If one claimed to be a Mormon but denied all the basic tenets of Mormonism — that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, that the Book of Mormon is true and divinely inspired, that god was once a man who progressed to godhood through keeping the laws and ordinances of the Mormon Church, and that the Mormon Church was divinely established — the Mormon Church would reject such a person’s claim to being a Latter-day Saint. One cannot fairly call oneself a Mormon if one does not believe the fundamental doctrines taught by the Mormon Church. By the same token, if the Mormon Church does not hold to even the basic biblical truths believed by the greater Christian community down through the ages, how can Christians reasonably be expected to accept Mormonism as authentic Christianity?

Any "religion" that has their own bible and adds to the Holy Bible is wrong and are considered a cult - hence the Mormons fall into that category. I don't know all of the aspects of their "religion" but I know it is a little twisted. A relationship with Jesus Christ and following Him is true Christianity and a bible-believing church that just teaches from the Holy Bible - the inspired Word of God - is all that is required to learn the Scriptures.

Yes, we are very much Christian. We believe in Christ, we love him, we want to be like him in every way, we follow his teachings.
Christians are defined as a person or group following Christ. And that is specifically what we are taught and strive to do.
Anyone who says otherwise is misinformed or just bitter towards the church.
