My date called me 35 minutes after an art exhibit starts to say that he is sick and can't make.
How should I view this?

First time he's done this? Give him the benefit of the doubt. In other words believe him to be true untill future events ever reveal him to be a liar.

Unless he had to go to the ER for an emergency procedure, I doubt he is telling the truth. I'd recommend that you refuse all future invitations from the guy, but that may be based on my own personal experiences. I had a guy that I was looking forward to dating one weekend call me at the last minute to say that "he'd burned himself out' (meaning he'd physically worn himself out from working). Although he was chatty on the phone and seemed to want to extend the phone conversation, I told him I'd let him go since it must be exhausted from all that work. It was obvious that he 'just wasn't that into me" as the expression goes. I was crushed because I really liked him, but I couldn't change the way he felt. It sounds like you have encountered a guy of the 'same breed.' If that is the case, I'm sorry. I hope you rebound quickly from jerks like that. Your date seems as inconsiderate and self focused as my date was--who didn't even offer to make alternative plans for the weekend. There isn't much you can do in the situation you described other than to ignore him the next time he'd like attention. Chances are good that letting him know how inconsiderate you thought his actions were will result in nothing helpful for you--why let him know it even caused you concern. I'd suggest you ask how he's feeling if he calls again...and always, always, be busy whatever time he'd like to see you again. Stay strong.

Depends....has he done this before? If so, then you don't want to go out with him again. Call a friend, check who is willing to go with you. Then call your date the next day and ask him what's going on and see if he really is sick.

He doesn't want to go to an art exhibit...So what? Go to the exhibit and have fun...Who knows, maybe you will meet a really cute artist there?

View it as a sign that he is a jerk and don't bother to contact him or let him contact you. If he was sick he already knew that far in advance not ALREADY too late for the date. Find someone else.

He doesnt want to date you. The sickness is just an excuse not to go out with you.

Well how are we suppose to know....there is information missing here. Does this happen often? How long have you two gone out? etc.

Have you considered the possibility that he is sick? With no hidden agenda?

You may never know the real reason for the cancellation, but your best bet is to go ahead with your plan. Who knows you may meet someone there!

He forgot about your date and he came up with a lame excuse. Move on and forget about him.
