I own a 9 week old Shih Tzu and have been crate training him. But I seem to have only gotten half of the training right, since he does no. 2 outside, but he pees outside and inside! and when he does it inside it's always a very small amount, not like when he's been holding it for a while. Is he marking his territory? or is he confused?

Puppies have to go pee more often than poop - you have to watch him like a hawk, and every time he even looks like he's thinking about looking like he has to go - rush him outside, and lots of praise for every little drop that he produces!! It's tiring I know, but they are smart little buggars and catch on quickly. Crate him when you can't be in the room with him to watch for his cues, just keep using the same words every time you take him outside and soon he'll respond when you ask him if he needs to go. I went through this with my Gracie, and it didn't take her long at all - but remember, he's still itty bitty and can't hold it for long!

he is most likely confused ( he is to young to want to mark territory). Do you have newspaper down inside your home? you shud, spend a good 2 or more hours sitting on the floor with him, and newspaper, when you see him squat or lift his leg, quickly pick him up and put him on the paper. Praise him telling him hes a good boy when even a dribble lands on the newpaper, this will get it in his mind that pissing on the paper makes you happy. Sit on the floor with him, doing this, atleast once a day. Also, to do a good job crate training the space inside his crate should be soft, and small enough for him to stand, laydown and turn around (not much else). Puppies, as well as dog wont piss or **** where they have to sleep (you do keep him in there over night.... if not, you should, it helps alot, getting him to think of it as his own bedroom) once he is way old, and likes being in his "bedroom" you dont have to keep him in there over night, and when you are gone out, he will naturally want to sleep in there, and if he gets into trouble, he will most likely go to his crate. It is very important not to smack him in any way when hes inside of his crate, this will result in fear bitting, which hurts, because it is the dog being scared, because he has no place to go, and even in his bedroom, your still getting him in trouble. If he fear bites, it will look scarey, like a pet gone bad. Dont let him turn out like this. All dogs can be good dogs, dogs dont want to be mean, owners want them to be "tough"

Hes still very young, continue the training and be patient. Praise correct behaviour when he wees outside good boy etc. Ignore the accidents indoors.
Consider using a word to encourage him to go at appropriate times. We use "busy busy" said in a certain tone of voice for our dogs and they will at least try to go :D When he goes outside say your word quickly followed by good boy! He will eventually link the word, the wee and good boy.
