Yup, the current figure stands at around 80,000 inmates in the UK at the moment. More than the prison system can deal with comfortably, which is why they are considering things like 'prison ships'
FYI...80,000 is actually less that half the amount of prisoners that California, USA has to deal with, they have around 170,000 in that state alone!!

Too many and one prisoner costs the tax payer £37,000 a year to keep in prison. The whole system needs to be reviewed. Seems to me that you get locked up for a crime, but you are still allowed playstations, TV etc. What kind of deterrent is that? Do they really rehabilitate?

Ask the cencus to give you the total amount of the population living in the uk add on another say 30´000 and thats how many pisoners you have in the uk

Too many. They closed a Prison ship because it didn't meet EU Health and Safety Standards. If you saw the ships we put our navy on (who are not criminals) you'd be supprised that they closed a prison ship which seemed like a palace compared to a HM Ship.

Far too damn many. There would be a lot less if all murderers and terrorists were hanged and all paedophiles were castrated, tagged and the Probation Service made to keep a close eye on them. There would then be plenty of room for all the yobs, thugs and thieves to be housed in warmth and comfort, probably a lot better than many pensioners are housed in this benighted country.

i read in another q that 1 in 700 people in uk are in prison so work it out.

if one was to hang all the people who kill people the prisons will be half full and whip the crims everyday so they know what they have done wrong.... or chop off there fingers so people can see what they have done
