If it does, doesn't that suggest that religion's just something people made up to help them deal with the terrible fact that they're going to die one day and they want someone to tell them that they aren't going to "really" die?

Yes but that's not the only reason. Religion also exists to explain the unknown, give people (false) hope, and control people.

Religion exists to try to assuage man's sinful nature, since religion is manmade. That's why all religions tell you not to worry about an afterlife or judgment, cause there's nothing to fear....ie hell, blah blah blah. Christianity, is a relationship with the creator of the universe who has told us of things to come in His Word, that's why it's really important to consider the source, and investigate all things very carefully! Because, unlike religion, if Christianity is true, there is MUCH to lose!

We are all going to die, we all know that. It's what happens to our souls after our bodies die that we wonder about. I don't fear death at all, I hope that it won't be long and painful but if it is, there's nothing I can do about it and I know that it won't last forever. I fear hell and rejoice in Heaven. I am Catholic because I worship my Creator, I honor and respect Him above all else and I want to meet Him someday and be able to live with Him forever. My religion teaches me how to live on earth so I can gain Heaven later. It hasn't been forced on me, it's taken years for me to decide to believe in what the Catholic Church teaches and I would worship God every day even if I didn't belong to a church or a religion. I know that God exists because I know that the universe didn't get here on it's own.

No. I'm religious, and I'm quite comfortable with the fact that I'm going to die of these days; it's just a part of the natural cycle. If I engaged in religious belief only to lull myself into a sense of false security regarding my own mortality, that'd be a pretty sad excuse for a religion. To me, religion is more about celebrating life.

Religion is more about those in power and in charge manipulating people. Spirituality emerged from people sensing that there is a deeper purpose to life, that there is a God. And yes, there are some people who simply cling to religion because they fear death.

Religion evolved from the time when our ancient ancestors began dealing with what they considered to be the spirit world. When they realize that they could enter trances either from plants or other substances, put themselves in a frenzy state of mind . Began performing rituals as a way to show you belong to that clan i.e. burying the dead, cave paintings. Yes in a way it has to do with death . One becomes part of the spirit world of that clan- but more importantly it has to do with hope- the human spirit interacting with the spirit world that we believe exist beyond this world

Religion offers very little to anyone.....It is faith that provides comfort.

I dont think that you have made a good assessment in thinking that everyone is afraid of death.

I am not afraid of death....but living on this earth has frightened me on many occasions. It is a world of sin, evil, hatred, and confusion....it is not a place that I would like to spend more time than I must. I am comforted in life, knowing that one day there will be no more sin or pain, and I will be with the person who loves me more than I can imagine....my Heavenly Father.

yes and no. Religion was originally made to explaine phenonenoms, such as lightning and rainbows, that could not be understood with the level to science avaliable at the time. The main reason religion exists today is due to traditions and a lack of full understanding of the universe. Life and death are both phenonenoms that are not yet fully understood.

A definite "yes" for Christianity, but not for all religions. Judaism is about life here on earth and helping God to finish His creation leading to peace on earth and justice for ALL! Everyone has a share in the world-to-come according to how we've lived our lives here on earth.

No - not all religions have a belief in the afterlife, so it wouldn't be the driving reason.

I think it's more based on the need for an explanation of things that happen in THIS life.
