I know they definately aren't the same, and that there are a few differences.. but I don't exactly understand where the lines are drawn and the more subtle differences.. Any input on this would be appreitiated.

In my opinion, dating is just seeing eachother, there is no real commitment there. While going out, is commitment, you don't see anyone else; and you shouldn't want to see anyone else. But because this does vary between people, its always best to talk to your partner about where you stand.

I went on what I thought was a date with a girl a few years back. She kept insisting that it wasn't a date so I presume she meant just 'going out'. I would say just 'going out' is a way of saying I'll spend time with you but don't expect to get anywhere. Of coarse I found out later that the girl I went out with was really a lesbian. I didn't see the problem though--- so am I! LOL
Have a great day!!!

Well dating is where you both are classified in the category that one another are still allowed to date other people. Going out is where you both are aware that you hold a title that you guys are boyfriend and girlfriend. Hope this is helpful!

Dating = no commitment
Going Out = usually is more committed, more of a regular basis

ie... I have been dating people but no one serious.
We have been going out for 3 months!

Dating indicates a loose committment, with possibility of further committment in due time.
Going out is just that. You enjoy that person's company WITHOUT a committment of a 'lock-in' relationship.

well. different people see it differently. Personally I see dating more as testing or searching for that someone. When dating, people usually see if it would work out or not. While when going out you have found that someone and you are going out with him/her meanign you're in a relaitonship.

I think dating doesn't necessarily imply exclusivity.

Going out does.

Just my opinion. But they are kinda similar in meaning.
