There are millions of Amish, they do profit from farming like selling the food they grow, milk, wood works they make etc. for nails, tools, horses, more seeds, land etc. I think they do benefit the economy by not being an extra drain on our oil and gas. Also, we can look at them to see how simple life can be if we want it to be. They work as a group when helping others ex. tornado came through and demolished a fellow Amish families house. The other Amish came together cleared out the mess and completely rebuilt a new home in just 2 days. They are awesome and I look up to them. I don't think I could permanently live the way they do. Maybe a day or two... week tops.

I don't know the statistics.
Yes they profit from their farming - some of them have made a very comfortable living for themselves!
They benefit the economy in the way any other successful enterprise benefits. Also, they don't take much out of the economy, they are so self-sufficient.
They got so much land the same way so many others did: they "got in on the ground floor". It has gone down through generations from a time when land could be obtained cheap. I say cheap, but it took a lot of very hard labour to make it profitable, so they didn't get it that cheap, they earned it.
As to their attitude toward technology - I agree I don't see the sense in it, but that's their business I guess, they are not doing me any harm. More technology would not have prevented the shooting. Dawson College, Columbine, the École Polyytecnique in Montreal, etc. etc. all had lots of technology. Didn't stop the shootings. (this last paragraph in response to one of the answerers)

Why do people respond to these questions when they don't know the answers?

As someone else noted, their are nearly 200,000 Old Order Amish between the US and Canada, not "millions."

The Amish pay taxes. They are exempt from paying social security because they do not collect from it when they reach retirement age.

They have a lot of farm land because they purchased it when they arrived in the United States, just like anybody else.

Due to a rising shortage of farm land within their communities, some Amish do work conventional jobs in factories and other places to earn a living.

They do consume petroleum based products because they do not wholly reject all technology, as is often assumed. They do have powered farming equipment, kerosene lanterns and use battery-powered home appliances. Some even have telephones, though they are still generally forbidden from keeping them within their homes.

They are a benefit to the economy because they pay taxes, sell produce and livestock, as well as consumer products in the form of simple crafts such as high-quality quilts. They also help their surrounding communities by encouraging tourism to purchase these goods as well as investing in the purchase of local commodities for their own use. They also refuse public assistance of any kind in the form of welfare or social security.

There are about 198,000 in the US.

Yes, they profit from farming, they use every bit of it to feed themselves and their livestock. Because of rising land prices, they also sell their crafts to "outsiders".

They are not a benefit to our society ... they do not pay taxes, they do not serve in our military or follow our laws, this was a special deal they worked out many years ago with our government.

They simply want to be left in peace.

Oh, they got the land by buying it.

they dont have to benefit our economy, they benefit us by not taking any thing from us. they are solely maintained, and they do have wares they work at and sell for profit.probably way better made than anything you can buy in store. most lands have been in the communities through out generations.
