The unknown is weird, people who don't REALLY know anything about the church, or are bitter towards it, spread false rumors and incorrect information about us...
We are really just nice, normal, morally clean poeple trying to live the gospel.
Contact me for more questions or talk to some LDS missionaries.

Probably the wierdest thing is that we believe in a living prophet. As a result, God's word is not just confined to the Bible, and the Bible is opened up in ways that others naturally challenge when it doesn't agree with their faith.
Stop and think about that one thing - a living prophet. God cared enough for his people in Bible times - are we any less important, that he should leave us to figure things out on our own? Many in the Bible times would quite happily accept prophets of days past and reject the prophet of the day. I think that's because it's easier to say you agree with prophets past while picking + choosing (and interpreting) things to suit your faith.
Another thing that may be termed 'wierd' is that we believe that the Church which Christ organised fell into apostasy. (Why else do you suppose there's so many Christian Churches out there preaching Christ but finding things to disagree on?) Of course, this often doesn't get received very well as some perceive that we're trying to claim "You're wrong and we're right!" - which admittedly turns out some wierd Mormons. (By the way, that's a nickname, spawned from the Book of Mormon which we sustain as scripture.)
Anyway, if you want to know if God lives and leads a church in our day, you can pray to know if Joseph Smith was a prophet. The Holy Spirit will witness of its' truth if you are seeking with the intent to follow God's will. Once you know this, you'll see how the other wierd things fit into place. Most will lose their wierdness. (Some will probably remain wierd until God gives us all knowledge). You may also find that some of the wierd things you may have read about us in other sources aren't true.

First of all I believe that there is nothig weird about any religion. I am not mormon but I just thought I'd get that point clear. I think this is the story:

Mormons believe that there is this planet where all the gods/angels live in. One day the gods decide to create another planet. Luciefer wanted to be lord of that planet but instead Elohim (god) became lord. Luciefer got mad and became Satan and other gods/angels that followed him became demons. So, if you be good you'll go to the god planet (it had a name I just dunno what) and if you are bad on earth you go to Satan.

Again, I am not momorn and I don't really know if it's all correct but it's the best I could do.

A lot of people think we vote in blocks, and that the prophet tells us everything that we should do, like what to wear, what to say, what to eat, how to vote, how to think, etc.
Then there's all the stories about what happens in the temple, and stories that may have a smidgen of truth, but are mostly lies.
Many people think that we don't believe in Christ as our Savior, or that we don't believe the Bible to be the word of God. My Mother told me that what "they" (meaning Mormons) "say they believe, isn't what they R E A L L Y believe". I love my Mother, but that just doesn't make sense.

short version for ya bro...
1. Joseph smith, a drunk, translated the book of mormon out of a hat
2. they say that there are many gods
3. they think they can become gods
4. they think elohim (the god that made our god) fathered jesus
5. they teach that jesus was not Born in jureslum
6. they dont let you into the temple unless you reach a high enough rank in the reilgion
7. they baptize themselves to save the dead
8. they think you have to do all kinds of good things or else u wont go to heaven
9. if you try and leave the church it pisses them off and makes life hard on you
10. finally they have many cult like rituals/lifestyles and thats kinda scary

EDIT** the story, shortned of course. joe saw god, god told him to find gold plates, he did, read them from a hat made it into a book, got a bunch of followers, and made a bunch of temples.

There are just a ton of misconceptions about us floating around out there, a lot of them are so wrong and so weird that they make me laugh...sadly, some people actually take these things seriously, and spread them around as such.

If you want to know what we're about, I'd suggest going to an official source for the church: www.lds.org - I'd start with the link that says basic beliefs.

best wishes
