I always wanted to live a life of separation in this modern fashionable world.I wanted to live a victorious life in this earthly world. So I prayed and poured my desire to my God.I claimed the promises in Acts 2 .God saw my desire and filled me with His power and love.It was all through His pure grace.
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the endowment of power from on high (Lk. 24:49 ).The Triune God comes to dwell in us (Jn.14 :16,20 ).Our heartis filled with the love of God (Rom.5:5). It is evidenced by speaking in tongues , as the Spirit gives utterance Acts 2 : 4 ).

I was in a Honda Civic June 28, 1982 and no one came to the Lord the way I did. I got washed by love as clean as hyssop and white as snow. I was asked if I wanted the baptism of the Holy Ghost and to speak in angelic tongues. I said, "Yes." I couldn't stay on the ground I wanted to fly. I was told it would be like a bubbling up from deep within my spirit that would overflow my lips and become a heavenly language. I learned in my prayer closet that it was an ancient form of speech.

I am grateful for the gift of tongues. It's kind of strange but I had just gone to a class that taught about it and when I went home and was by myself I prayed to God and asked Him for the gift. I felt Him speak to my heart, to hold out my hand and receive it like a present and on one condition at that time, it was to always start my prayer with the word, Abba. This word didn't mean anything to me until I later learned about it.
There is no set formula or even fireworks that you feel.
Just ask in Faith

I received the gift of tongues in church, shortly after my (adult) journey began. Yes, I prayed for it.
I don't use it much because I'm Baptist now, though once in a while when I am visiting a charismatic church I join in, and sometimes when I'm praying privately. I know a lot more about how to pray now, and I used tongues as a shortcut of sorts.
It's a tool one can use, and nothing more.

Yes, I received the gifts of tongues, I was at bible study, Yes I prayed for it, I pray in tongues as often as possible. I asked God for it in prayer, shortly after, my preacher stopped in mid conversation and told him God revealed to him that I wanted to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Needless to say, I was in shock! They prayed for me, told me to open my mouth and let the spirit that was in me flow, I did and IT did. It was awesome!

Speaking Law Law to God on high in plural divided Law Law heavens, is a spiritual gift of the Holy Ghost(Dead) to those without [are] dogs, sorcerers, whoremongers, murderers, idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie(law).
Now concerning spiritual, brethren, I would not have you ignorant... Though I speak with the tongues of (plural)men and (plural)angels, and have not charity(never faileth), I am be-come [as] sounding brass, or tinkling cymbal... thereby I am nothing and it profiteth me nothing.
Puffed up with High & Mighty Law Law is self-edification.
(work out your own salvation only with Fear & Trembling)
Edify & exhort further up to comfort is church edification.
The God of all comfort is a God of no dis-comfort at all.
That God, in Christ, speaks only one tongue: grace us.
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.
