Perhaps he could ask her if she'd like to join him for a drink at the bar. If she likes the look of him she'll say yes, if not, it'll be easy to let him down gently.
The worst thing is when you have a guy use corny chat-up lines on you - so he shouldn't do that! It makes you say anything to get rid of them!
A shy guy who really likes you is actually very appealing to a girl (so long as she's not a shallow slapper!), but it's important not to be too shy. He should try to come out of himself for a while. The shyness will only be charming for so long!

Don't ask her if she is waiting for anyone, act dumb on that and just assume she is alone. The rest comes out naturally due to her response. If she fancies you then continue to humour her with romantic jokes. Women love laughter and who doesn't. Ask her what she is drinking and you as the perfect gentleman, will buy her one . If there is a dancing floor, invite her to dance with you.

well dont use "do u come here often" like my mate did, needless to say he got nowhere! I find it difficult in a nightclub, tens to meet girls through friends or at work. I think u can only be yourself, if she doesnt like u for that then it aint worth it

Be natural. If you are shy, play shy. Go to her and ask "what do you say to the prettiest girl in the club?". Works.
