Love is subjective, so it could technically be love, since it's an intangible conception of the human psyche, and differs for everyone. I know some people who stay in/persue nothing but love-hate relationships because they get off on that sort of emotional turbulence, it's what they're accustomed to, and it's the only way they can function and deep down, be content.

Love of any sort will hurt. It's not perfect, because humans aren't perfect. Think about the love between parents and children; there's a lot of pain there... arguments, fights or flights, distance, inner turmoil, and these people are bonded via *blood*. Why do people expect romantic relationships to be all rainbows and rosebuds? From the moment a person asks/consents to becoming another's SO, they simply have a verbal contract (if you will) to be there for each other in certain ways; they don't magically morph into un-erring unicorns.

lost love makes people unhappy most of the time. True love is never lost though. Thats what it makes people unhappy.

many types of love. Being in love is one of the most violent, most insane, most delusive and most TRANSIENT of passions; and when people have to promise (marriage) that they will remain in this excited, abnormal and exhausting condition continuously until death do them apart - it can perfectly lead to unhappiness. Obsessive love is also an unhappy one.

A selfish love. Love can have its ups and downs, but for the most part you should feel 'elevated'. As in happy. You should put each other first in a relationship.

That sure isnt love at all! If one really loves a person, you would do anything in your power to see that person happy.
