I correct my children because I want them to use proper grammar. Using bad grammar and having a poor vocabulary will hinder them when they are adults. It isn't a matter of being stuck up, it's a matter of wanting what is best for your child.

Would you rather have your child corrected in front of his/her class in school all the time? The more that is learned from the parent, the less that has to be learned at school. Sometimes teachers are not very tactful and their correction can seem more like criticism to a sensitive child, than learning. Correct grammar helps with literacy and literacy helps with getting through life. Do you want your child to be working at McDonald's forever just because he/she never learned to read properly and can't do well in college or university? Please re-think your opinion on this matter.
By the way, I'm definitely not stuck up. I did well in school, but only because of my own hard work, not because I was popular (I was part of the less desireable crowd). But, I grew up with a love of learning a reading. I can't get enough reading into a day and would rather do that than work!!

Correcting our children is how we teach them. If they learn how to speak correctly from the beginning, they will have less trouble distinguishing incorrect grammar from correct grammar in both speech and reading.
You don't correct a child too young to understand the difference between correct and incorrect grammar. It is not about being "stuck up". It is about caring enough about our children to want to give them the best start possible.

I don't think this is really a question that can be generalized to mattering to women. Perhaps some mothers and indeed parents feel it is important that their children speak their proper dialect. I'm sure there is a way of going about it that wouldn't be demeaning, as you seem to be describing, but again, that depends on the person who is the parent. It is important, however, for children to learn to speak clearly as their will effect all of their interpersonal relationships in the future. Parents just want their children to get what they need and what they deserve out of life, so they are going to do everything they can to make them successful... at least most parents will.

We correct our children because we want our children to sound educated. Anyone can talk like a two year old, but as you get older proper grammar is important. It can be key in securing a good job and it will help you do well in school. It is not about being stuck up, it's about being intelligent.

If a child uses good grammar when they are young it will stay with them when they get older. Bad grammar makes people seem less intelligent and lazy. For example; two people are up for the same job one uses bad grammar one uses good grammar, who do you think they will give the job to? Good of coarse.

You really don't think ssome os stuck up for correcting a child using bad gramma?
They'll be using it all of their lives unless they are trained to speak properly when young. This is the most important time of their lives to be trained in gramma, and manners..Children who are not trained in good grammar, will also likely be allowed to curse early, be sloppy in their homework, bedrooms, school work, appearence, and manners. This could follow them though out life, and efect them in high school, college.and adult life there after.
Thjey could go on to become even worst things than being your child like attorneys , politicians, orpreists.:).
A child should b e taughted good grammar and manners, and clean living early and they will follow that trait for ever.

How dumb! Correcting a child is not stuck up or even wrong. Most mothers want to prepare their children for the future, by teaching, guiding, and even correcting. Thats like sayign if your child fails a test because they didn't do the material, and oh well, lets not try to help the child LEARN it. When will people like you stop being so dumb and ignorant?

It's not being stuck up, it's teaching our children to take pride in themselves enough to speak properly. Have you seen some of the questions and answers posted on this site? It's appalling how many people don't spell correctly or write anything close to being literate. More people should pay attention to grammar and stop sounding so uneducated and ignorant. And yes, I used the spell check button before I posted this.

I think it is incredibly good to correct grammar in children, especially when they begin school. It is MUCH easier to learn it properly the first time around rather than learning it incorrectly and spending years (many times unsuccessfully) trying to re-learn it correctly. Grammar these days in schools is often overlooked, so if a mother wants her child to speak properly it is best to begin the process at home.
I correct my kid's grammar, as well as my husband's. He appreciates it because speaking properly helped him perform well in an interview and land an incredible job. I don't think I'm stuck-up... :-\
