Usually when I'm packing my lunch, I try to include a little bit of everything. A balanced lunch is the key to a healthy workday.

Complex carbs (grain products, like whole wheat bread) are always good to help keep your energy level up throughout the day. This means some whole grains for breakfast, and some at lunch too. Today I had some oatmeal, and I had a couple peanut butter and jam sandwiches on whole wheat, but I often have tuna or deli meats to ensure I get a decent amount of protein too.

Light snacks are good. Look for rice crackers or crackers with a low calorie count, so you can munch them freely throughout the day without overdoing it. Vegetables are great as a daytime snack as well, as they're packed with vitamins but lack a calorie punch. Things like potato chips or nuts can be bad as an all-day sort of snack, as you'll easily consume more calories than you probably should without realizing it.

I always bring some juice and/or fruit as well. The simple carbs (sugars) from these help if you're starting to feel sluggish and need some energy to recharge. Especially into the afternoon.

Just remember, include a good mix of your basic food groups, plan to eat smaller snacks and meals when you can, and you'll be energized throughout your work day!

Sometimes, I'll just get a salad from one of the many drive-through places. It's light, and nothing could be easier, since you're not actually making it yourself. On the way home, I'll stop by and pick up the salad, then toss it in the fridge when I get home. In the morning, just take it to work, and stuff it in the company fridge. Presto, instant light lunch.

I've worked at places where I got free food, and places where I'd have to pay for them (which I didn't do just to save money from a meager paycheck). So I'd pack a sandwich and yogurt and a few cans of sparkling water.

The one place, I couldn't even have a bottle of water at my station, and trust me, I'd get dehydrated from the heat. I'd grab a can from my lunch bag and guzzle it on a quick bathroom break.

I usually bring a sandwich or wrap....wheat bread or wrap with tuna or turkey with lettuce and tomato. I also pack some raw veggies to snack on like carrots or broccoli. I always include bottled water or fruit juice. In the winter I have herbal tea to warm me up.
