Well... there haven't been many studies on the effects of microwave ovens, but this site http://www.relfe.com/microwave.html lists some of the preliminary research. Also, it might not be the microwaves that most people commonly worry about, but in fact what you use as a container. Even "microwave-safe" plastic has recently shown evidence of releasing harmful chemicals from the plastic. Here's an old article from the WSJ http://www.mindfully.org/Plastic/Microwave-Health-Problems.htm. The FDA says that chemicals are released, but under "acceptable levels." I don't know, it's tough to say without concrete research, but I'd say that I would play it safe and use a teapot!

You just have to give it a minute to equalize the temperature. The problem with microwaves is that they heat very unevenly... so there will be super-heated spots and cooler spots. Stir it up, and let it cool down a bit.

One thing I have to mention: do not ever microwave distilled water. Seriously. It can explode in your face. For some reason, the lack of impurities in distilled water will cause super-heated non-bubbling weird stuff. Regular bottled water is fine though.

Microwaves discombobulate and otherwise genetically alter the molecular pattern and arrangement of the water molecules, at the sub-atomic level: thereby creating an isotope that tends to degrade both physical and mental performance and functioning, ever so imperceptibly, until you end up needing a Heimlich manoeuver (British spelling, here), in order to keep on breathing. Or, the worst case scenario has you developing amyloid plaques, along the neuronal synapses of both the gray and white matter--but not the black ganglions--of the brain.
After which, the thin, tall martians with those huge almond-shaped shiny black eyeballs come to pluck you up, out of the middle of the night and teleport you into their ships, for a ride through the space-time continuum, while probing your orifices, looking for Oreo cookies.

It's safe.
A microwave heats things by exciting the molecules in food using radio waves. When these waves generated by the oven are absorbed by food or water they are converted directly into atomic motion, which means heat.
I see no problem whatsoever in heating whater or any other food in a microwave oven. Enjoy your coffee!

Sometimes I heat water for tea in the microwave. I didn't develop an extra eye or anything. I think it's safe enough.

of course you can? Its not a carcinogen...Its not plutonium.

A microwave works by transmitting radio waves into the food. The radio waves cause the molecules in the food to jump around causing friction...This produces the heat.

see you later because the water is warm sufficient for the bacteria's enzymes to end functioning, then it is secure. yet i might want to cover the water at the same time as heating it because who's familiar with how dirty the microwave is....
