Sure they can and they still are. But also, they are trying to teach you to do these things for yourself. They took care of you through your childhood, yet know you're growing up and will move away. You're now old enough. It's time for you to take care of yourself. You're doing things for yourself and the family so you don't go out into the world unprepared.

When you show a sense of responsibility such as doing things that need to be done without being told to do so, I bet you'll see a big change in your parents' attitude toward you.

Because there are 12, 13, & 14 years olds having kids. There are pervs out there who rape & abduct kids & young adults & murder them. WHY??? because kids DO NOT PAY ATTENTION!!! They lack common sense & they have the attitude, NOTHINGS GOING TO HAPPEN TO ME!!!!
Kids cannot take charge of themselves because they DO NOT know how to be responsible for themselves & their actions. Just like when a 16 year old gets a driver's license & off they go, stereo blasting, cell phone in one hand, looking around or in the mirror & NOT PAYING ATTENTION, next thing the 16 year old is looking at the aftermath of the accident they caused, leaving a young woman & her 13 month old baby dead!!!!!!

you learn responsibility by doing things for yourself and doing things around the house, not by sitting on the computer all day. your parents legally only have to provide you with a place to sleep (not a nice place), a roof, 3 meals a day, basic medical care, and 2 outfits (clothing). everything else is extra. part of your job in the family is to help take care of the family. your way of paying rent is learning how to become a responsible citizen, doing well in school, cleaning up after yourself, and helping around the house. or would you rather pay rent? personally, if my kid had your attitude, i would cut them down to what i must legally provide for them until they shape up.
when you have kids, you can turn around and treat them the way your parents treat you because, and i know from experience, you will discover many times in your life once you become a parent when you will call your parents and apologize for being such a creep to them when you were a kid/teen

Legally untill your 18 in America the parents have gurdian ship of u. It's up to them on how much independence they want to give u. That's all I can think of the answer this confusing question. I translated this "they can do something themselves can't they" to mean I'm a teen and they aren't giving me enought independence. I hope this answer has possibly helped.

Parents know what you need... As you get older their rein on you usually lessens... But until then, you need to do what they want you to (unless it's something bad).
Most parents get very frustrated and feel like they are failing their children if they don't listen to them.
It's respect. Respect is something all people should have for other people whether it's their parents, their children, their friends, or strangers.

It's about teaching respect and responsibility, which I see you need to learn a lot of yet. Your parents went through it when they were kids, and you'll put your kids through it when you're a parent. Even though right now you're probably thinking,"when I have kids I'll let them do whatever they want." Just wait, you'll see

I never asked anything of my children that I wouldn't do myself. It taught them responsibility, and a little about how to fend for themselves when nobody else is there for them.

Because they gave birth to you, and it's their job to teach you how to function in society. And in the process they get to tell you what to do because, you live in their house, use their cars until you get your own. use their electronic devices around their home. and you get to use the water, electricity, and phones, that they all pay for, for free. You have to pay the cost to be the boss.

Of course we can, but it's our job to teach you to do it! What it takes to do it and a family is a team and all the team members have to help out!!
