My lil sister has such a bad scalp. She gets her hair washed about 3 times a week, and the very next day her scalp is flaky. Im talking really big scaly patches. She has a head full of gorgeous hair, but im scared it's going to start breaking off due to the condition of her scalp. She doesnt have lice (never has), and her dermatologist told her it was psoriasis and gave her a medicated shampoo that did NOT work. She's tried Head & Shoulders & Selsun blue, & they work temporarily but then her scalp goes right back! Its really really bad. WHAT CAN I DO FOR HER??

As someone stated there is no cure for psoriasis. I can tell you from experience nothing works for very long and the best thing you can do is to keep changing shampoos regularly.

Try shampoos that have pine tar, (tegra shampoo) they worked the best for me, also stay away from all that expensive stuff like selson blue and buy the cheap stuff ( Suave shampoo, Equate brand head and shoulders ) all work just as well.

You said she had a head full of gorgeous hair, and you may not want to here this but the other thing that you may consider doing is keeping her hair as short as possible, letting the air get to her scalp will also help clear it up. That was my Doctors orders.

Don't you worry, tell her not too worry, her hair won't break off and if it helps I can tell you that mine (the psoriasis) goes through phases, you'll have times when it heavy and times when it's light. I'll have times that it will be completely gone and be gone for weeks sometimes months and then return. Each individual is different.

Mine started when I was 13 years old and I'm now 54 and you learn with time how to best control it and what works best for you. and most of all tell little sister it isn't the end of the world like she may think it is. I can just imagine her thoughts, I've been there.

Ther IS a cure for psoriasis....little miss NICOLE is either behind in her beauty times or just very badly retarded. WATCH YOUR COMMERCIALS NICOLE! LMAO Seems thats the only way these kids understand life now-a-days is thru tv. ANYWAYS......I had really bad psoriasis on my scalp and my outer ankles and my elbows. This was when I was a kid and there wasnt all these medications out there today. YOU HAVE TO WASH YOUR HAIR EVERY DAY. If you are caucasion you have to wash it every day anyway....Head and Shoulders is for dry scalp......your sister has VERY DRY SCALP. The key is to keep it moist. As moist as you can as much as possible. Since we didnt have the meds thats out there now we used good old vaseline and kept my hair pulled up or try Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion- Renew & Protect. Try a leave in conditioner and apply it 3 or 4 times a day and maybe the lotion at night. Just load it on and put a plastic bag or something like that on her head. The plastic keeps the moisture in and nothing on her pillow......I dunno Im not one for buying a whole lot of expensive things and try what i have home first. Normally natural things work better than the stuff you buy, its nothing but chemicals. And what do chemicals do? DRY YOU HAIR AND SKIN OUT. Remember the only part of your hair that is alive is the root....what you wash and comb or brush is all dead.

do not use head and shoulders or selsun blue. that is what is causing her scalp to get worse. your lil sis needs a moisterizing shampoo. her scalp sounds like its dry. apply some oil. u can go to the bueaty supply and buy vitamin e oil, coconut oil, or any hair oil will do. be sure to oil her scalp.

i dont even know how to start, it's a pity. i could imagine how bad i will feel to have a long and good hair as hers and still be infected with such patches.
maybe she has used a cream that is allergic to her scalp, i suggest she change the cream she uses and also visit a dermatologist.

It may also be Eczema. My husband has it and it gets worse when he tries to grow his hair out. He alternates between a steroid/cream combo, Head & Shoulders, and a medicated shampoo from Galderma called Capex. Getting multiple doctors opinions couldn't hurt.

Find another doctor -a good dermatologist. Also, be sure she drinks enough water and is eating a good diet of food.

go to another doctor.....there are differnt medications and one may work for her.....she just needs to try differnt options....there is no cure for psoriasis....so trial and error is going to be the only way to find something that may keep it under control....
