DO NOT take the advice of some - keeping the car could be a problem ESPECIALLY if the car was stolen or used in a crime. You wouldnt want to end up being fingered as part of a theft ring or God forbid, a murder investigation.

Call the Cops and have them investigated. I hate to sound melodramatic, but now days you never really know the full story behind these things. Play it safe and call the cops.

Just ask the cops if the vehicle is not reported stolen and seems to simply be abandoned - if you can keep the car. If they give you the green light - take it and sell it.

Depends where you live i know someone who sells scrap cars and would just tow it away, however its not yours so best get in touch with your local council they will come along slap a sticker on it to the effect it has been abandoned probably wait 28 days for a response if no responds they should dispose of it.

Contact the appropriate authorities - police, city counsel, ect. If nothing is done contact any towing company or junk yard and ask them what there policy is on hauling away abandoned vehicles, they will usually pick them up for free because if it is never claimed they can then keep any profits made from selling the vehicle or parts.

Is the car on private or public property? If public, start with the local police, if private, contact the county or district attorney and see what your rights are. The police should be able to trace ownership by the VIN #. Abandon vehicle laws vary by state.

Any towing Company will tow at no charge to you, you can even call your local police dept for asst, also if it appears to be a half way decent car contact your DMV and fill out the required paper work for an abandonment title and it will be yours free and clean

You could contact the police. They will probably want to pass the buck but make sure they give you the name and number of the persons who are supposed to handle it.

Or, you could also call the Department of Motor Vehicles for your state and report the license plate. Maybe it was stolen or used in a crime, you never know. You may end up helping someone solve a mystery.

I had one outside my house in England a couple of years back. About three of my neighbours (and me) complained to the council and they eventually came and towed it away.
You have to pay for cars to be scrapped so people just dump them anywhere they can(a bit like sofas and fridges!), and of course if a car is parked carefully in a residential street it takes a while for householders to realise that it doesn't belong to anybody living there! The lack of a tax disc usually gives it away!!
It's amazing how crafty these selfish people have become when it comes to getting rid of unwanted belongings.

When you phone the council tell them you have made a record of your call and that if anyone is injured because of this car you will inform the injured party, you have reported the car to the council and they are responsible under Health and Safety Regs. The council will have it removed as soon as possible,My advice is by experience.
